The Swedish Society for the Study of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia (Östsällskapet) is a politically independent forum for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and information about the region.
Founded in 1997, the Society brings together researchers, students and professionals from a wide range of academic and professional fields who share an interest in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Our members
The Society brings together members with expertise in fields including:
- political science
- sociology
- economics
- geography
- history
- philology and languages
Our membership also includes translators, diplomats, journalists, teachers and other professionals whose work relates to the region.
Activities and publications
The aim of the Swedish Society is to promote knowledge and understanding of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Sweden.
The Society organises lectures, seminars, conferences and other events that provide opportunities for discussion and exchange. Members also contribute articles and other publications on topics related to the Society’s geographical focus.
The Society’s former publication, Östbulletinen, was published between 1997 and 2022 and is now available as a digital archive. Today, articles are published on the Society’s website on an ongoing basis.
International cooperation
The Swedish Society is a member of the International Council for Central and East European Studies (ICCEES). Through its activities and international connections, the Society supports networking and the exchange of knowledge and ideas among researchers and other professionals in Sweden and internationally.
